Widener Faculty member Justin Sitron, PhD will present "Sexuality & Parenting."

In 2016, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) published a set of recommendations about the importance of pediatricians beginning conversations with parents about the sexuality education of children. The article also suggested that youth-serving professionals engage in advocacy work to promote policy supporting comprehensive sexuality education in schools.

Their recommendations offer a hefty charge for youth-serving professionals, and this workshop aims to provide some strategies to help youth-serving professionals align with the AAP goals and recommendations. Their recommendations challenge much of the dominant paradigm around when sexuality education should happen because so much of the focus of typical sexuality education efforts tends to be on puberty and focused on adolescents, with the end goals being the prevention of disease or unintended pregnancy. Comprehensive sexuality educators, however, would argue that some of the most important education should happen from birth until puberty even starts.

This workshop will:

Review the key developmental milestones in sexual development from birth to age 12, alongside the key messages that adults can give young people as they develop.

Explore ways for professionals to provide age-appropriate information to children, and talk about what it means to be an approachable and reliable resource to young people.

Discuss strategies for engaging parents to think about beginning these conversations in their families and offer ways to support them as they talk with their children.

This event provides two (2) CE credits.

Free event parking available.

Light Refreshments will be served.
